Inventive Promotion
I don’t know Whiting Award winner John Wray but I like his style. Seems he hated every minute of his book-signing tour for his first book The Right Hand of Sleep. When it came time to tour for his next book, Canaan’s Tongue, described as "a baroque tale set in the pre-Civil War South" he decided the answer was to build a raft and go on a 600-mile journey down the Mississippi River. He stops at bookstores along the way to sign - I do not know exactly where those would be, so don’t ask.
So, how ’bout this - my second book takes place in Vegas. To promote the thing, my publisher sets me up in a suite at Bellagio and I start signing right after I lose all of my gambling money, which with my luck at that sort of thing is somewhere on the morning of Day Two of my stay.
Yeah, I don’t think I can sell this plan either.
