A New Feature

I’ve made a decision. Okay, another decision. I love books and love reading about books - that shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who stops by here. So…once a week I’m going to highlight a new or upcoming book from a new author, new-to-me-author or author favorite - my blog, so I get to choose.

This isn’t one of those online promo things. I’m not getting anything in return…not even free copies of the books (damn it!). The authors won’t know I’m pimping their works in advance. Most of the authors will never know because they have no idea who I am. No reviews. Go to PBR for that. This is just me highlighting books and authors because I want to highlight books and authors.

Now, I’m a bit late with this first one. I happen to know the author because we share the same editor and sold close in time to each other….

Bad Boys Ahoy! by Sylvia Day from Kensington Brava (Feb. 2006).

Why: She’s new and new is exciting. It’s easy to get in a cycle where we pick up the auto-buys but only grab new authors if someone raves - well, here’s the good news: people are raving about Sylvia. If you give her a chance, she could become one of those old favs.

Historical romance is dead, dying or on the rise, depending on which article you’re reading at that moment. The conversation on this subject would be confusing if it weren’t so annoying. I usually ignore the chatter because, well, I’m not a big historical romance reader. Okay, I read almost none. Brava doesn’t do that many, but I like the idea of a pirate, so I bought this (twice, actually, since I bought it for a friend as well). Thanks to a pressing deadline, I haven’t read it yet.

On a more personal level, consider that Sylvia is an impressive ambassador for the genre. She loves it. Doesn’t apologize for it. Demands legitimacy for erotic romance and took time from her schedule (and family) to set up (and then run) the Passionate Ink Chapter of RWA. Yeah, she’s going to be around for a long time, so we should all get on board now.

I admire her for the whole Passionate Ink thing. I’m sure it wasn’t easy with the fear that some in RWA hold for erotic romance. And I have also heard good buzz for this book.

I make myself read at least one new-to- me author a month. Keeps me more well rounded I think.

I love Sylvia Day. I am so happy for her success. And you are correct, her historicals
rock, and are well loved by this reviewer/reader.

  3. Jordan Says:

This book is terrific and Sylvia’s a doll.

I just finished this book and absolutely loved every story. I agree that Sylvia has the potential to be one of those classic favorite authors. She writes stories that I love, and remind me of my keepers. Can’t wait for more….
