Mrs. Giggles just gave a book a score of 9. This is on a scale of 100. In case you’re unclear, that means Mrs. Giggles did not like Shirley Jump’s The Bachelor Preferred Pastry.
There is no question Mrs. Giggles is at her most interesting when she doesn’t like a book. If you don’t believe me, go read this review. There’s also no question that Mrs. Giggles has given decent scores (in the 70s – for her that’s decent) to books I read and hated, and low scores to books I really liked. We all view things differently.
I haven’t read this book but Mrs. Giggles sums it up like this:
I don’t give single-digit scores to books often. I only dish them out when a book is particularly horrifying in an unspeakable manner. The fact that this book starts out so good only to mutate into a grotesque Daddy Dearest story featuring a heroine that embodies all the laughably sad weak female stereotypes around is what makes this book horrifying in an unspeakable manner. The fact that the ending makes me feel like I want to break things to release my frustrations only makes things worse.
The good news for Jump is that Mrs. Giggles talks about what a good writer Jump is and that her other books were enjoyable. The other good news is that reviews like this make many people – yeah, I’m talking about me here – pick up the book. One of those just-need-to-see-for-myself type of things.

LOL! Makes me want to read the book, too. I have it! Just haven’t gotten around to it, yet. I think Mrs. Giggles loves the attention and she likes to get a rise out of ya. However, she does speak her mind and there’s nothing wrong with that. Jump’s books are good. Sheesh!

by sharon July 1st, 2006 at 11:32 amIt is amazing how an unfavorable review, told in a funny and colorful way, can inspire some people to pick up a book when a good review won’t. We can be so contrary, can’t we? LOL
by Stacy ~ July 1st, 2006 at 11:57 pmThis is my first time to your blog. It looks very interesting.
HelenKay – I do like your stories and have enjoyed Shirley Jumps “food books”. Some of the recipes look yummy.
by Pat July 2nd, 2006 at 1:13 amThere are a lot of similar sounding comments on here HK, are you being spammed? If so, they almost sound genuine!
by Karen Scott July 2nd, 2006 at 7:45 amHello everyone and welcome!
Karen – My giveaway this month is a $25 B&N gift certificate to someone randomly selected from people who comment on my blog. I think people are de-lurking as a result – which is great! I tend to lurk on sites and know I’d post if someone offered me free books or a way to get free books. And…ummm, sorry about the World Cup match yesterday. Bummer to lose that way.
by HelenKay July 2nd, 2006 at 8:58 amI haven’t read any of Mrs. Giggles reviews in a long time but I did find them amusing when I did read her. Amusing, but she can get a bit mean when reviewing a book. Some of them I agreed on, some of them I didn’t. But I never based my book buying by any of her reviews. I just read them for fun. But wow, 9 out of 100 score is so low. I think I’d pick up the book anyway, just to see if I agreed or not with her review.
by Sara A. July 2nd, 2006 at 2:29 pmAnd as the author, being the masochist that I am, I did read the review, quite surprised that Mrs. Giggles despised this book so much. I mean, that’s real hatred there. Almost makes me want to quit writing.
But then, if I did that, I would miss the opportunity to again torture Mrs. Giggles with something she deems horrific, and not complete the dent she is making in her trees with my books.
by Shirley Jump July 22nd, 2006 at 9:19 amShirley – I didnt see the review. But I liked all the “food” books. Read them all but the first which is on my tbr. The recipes were an added attraction – really yummy looking.
