Back From Las Vegas
I’m back home. Had a lovely time in Las Vegas. This time the lights and electricity stayed on at Bellagio.*** I do have a few thoughts to offer:
-Dry or wet, 109 degrees is freaking hot. Like, cook a steak on your back hot. You folks who live in the desert need to tell me how you do it.
-I see newspaper/magazine articles all the time about how no one is reading anymore. Clearly the authors of these articles have never been to the pools at Bellagio. Everyone seemed to have a book. Except for one guy (not the guy I’m married to, but another one) who was reading Tuesdays With Morrie, most folks had mysteries, chick lit and romantic suspense. Saw two people holding Catherine Coulter hardcovers. Not an easy feat while balancing a drink and slathering on suntan lotion. Bottom line: I don’t buy the premise that people aren’t reading. I also don’t know why this guy at the pool still had not finished Tuesdays With Morrie after four days of reading. It’s not exactly a thick and complex read.
-The double whammy of men with super hairy backs (as in shirt-like fur) and speedos is enough to blind a person.
-When I decided to take a short break from email correspondence, every person in the world needed to track me down. My editor, my agent, a few friends, some internet buddies who are expecting email responses - everyone. Only two folks said “where the hell are you” - though a few others had the right to ask (Marta and Stephanie being just two patient souls waiting for me send a simple email - sorry guys). I’m back and promise to get caught up on everything by Monday.
-Sometimes stepping away from the internet means you miss huge blow-ups such as this and this. That is a good thing. See, I likely would have stumbled across these, stepped up and called into question some of the inaccuracies about the justice system. Would have had to point out the difference between being a prison reform activist and being a person who tries to justify a murder and the early release of a murderer from jail when no one contests the basis of what appears to be a legitimate prison sentence. I probably would have said something a touch heated and offended someone (or several someones) out there. So, yeah, it’s a good thing I wasn’t here to weigh in on that fight.
But now I’m back…
***If you don’t know what that means, go buy and read Viva Las Bad Boys.

Welcome back Helen! I’ve never been to any of the states past where I am! I don’t like to fly so I won’t ever get out there to the west, but I was always curious about LV. I didn’t realize tho how hot it is! That I don’t deal with well. I guess thats why I never complain about the snow here in the winters.
Oh I always see many people in the bookstores, libraries and too in the parks reading. So I know that many read! I got a son who reads lots and my hubby says he is as bad as I am when it comes to books, smile.
Congrats on YOUR MOUTH DRIVES ME CRAZY coming out soon! Been so looking forward to this one! Have fun catching up on emails. I never can!

Hey I’m glad this time to Vegas was better for you. I was there at the end of November and was surprised that it was colder than Chicago, but I’d go back anytime.
I’m so looking forward to YMDMC - soon, soon….
Yeah, blogland is one gigantic place where sometimes it’s better to just stay home.

You are a better woman than I.
I also don’t know why this guy at the pool still had not finished Tuesdays With Morrie after four days of reading. It’s not exactly a thick and complex read.
LOL. It seems obvious that he was more interested in ogling the scantily clad bodies, no?

I am one of those hotties!
i live in Arizona and today it is 110 degrees with a slight breeze. Yes it is hot but everyone adapts to it-we have AC’s in buiildings, misters outside cafes,, lightweight clothing and we wear hats and sunglasses. If you get your head in the shade, it’s not too bad.
But you must admit, we have wonderful winter weather.

Two words: Air conditioning.
In this house we don’t turn on our heater in winter, no matter how cold it gets (it got as low as 61 degrees inside this past winter), to make up for how high our power bill is in summer. I can deal with the cold. I’ve got warm clothes and blankets. I can’t deal with it being 80+ degrees in my living room. My brain stops functioning. As for going outside…well, June-August I do very little of that.

Oh, yeah, forgot to say, I live in Vegas. 105 isn’t too bad. It’s when you get to 115 that more than five minutes outside makes you want to die. Especially in July/August when it often gets humid as well.

Next time can you take me to Vegas so I can miss it too *sigh*
Welcome home.

You’re right! Hot is hot, but I still prefer dry heat. I’d love to move to Arizona and get away from this northeast Indiana “stickiness”.
