Book And A Latte
I’m still getting caught up with everything. In fact, if I owe you a book or bookmarks or something of that sort, don’t panic. The packages will go out on Monday.
In the interim, I’ve been reading Obsession, Deceit and Really Dark Chocolate by Kyra Davis. This is the third Sophie Katz (the heroine) novel.
The first in the series, Sex, Murder and a Double Latte, caught my attention because it came out originally as a small hardcover. It was the first time I saw a Red Dress Ink book (Harlequin’s chick lit imprint) in hardcover. I was intrigued, so I picked it up. Read it, loved it, had to buy it again when my dog ate my copy…
Note that she never eats books I hate.
Here’s a back-and-forth in Obsession between Sophie (who is an author and wannabe PI) and another character named Johnny that made me chuckle:
“I’m an author, too, you know.”
“Really,” I [Sophie] asked. “What have you written?”…
“I haven’t actually written anything, but I do have a book. It’s all up here.” He tapped his forehead with his index finger.
I managed not to roll my eyes. I had long since lost track of how many people (from lawyers to waiters) had told me they were really writers at heart. As far as I was concerned that claim didn’t mean a lot until you wrote something. It was a detail that most of these unrecognized “authors” didn’t seem to be willing to address.
All goes back to the same point: writers write.

Hi HelenKay~ That’s what I’m going to do right now! Write. I’m at 43,000 words, 7,000 more to go by Friday’s NaNo deadline. I can do it! Have a great day and happy writing!

Girlfriend, there is no finer truth. The hard part is butt in chair, words on a page.

Don’t you just love those titles? With the word chocolate in it, it must be sinfully good. *G*
As for your dog only eating the books you love, that’s normal as far as I can tell. Every pet I’ve had has been like that. My sister has a dog that ate one of my books that I had loaned her - before she even got to read it. LOL

So what did you think of this book Helen? I reviewed it a while ago and had mixed feelings about it.

Robin - Congrats on the writing!!
Hi Lucie - I love the graphic on your website. The “Nice to Naughty” made me smile.
Robin - I’m happy to know my dog is not the only one. But, really, would it kill her to eat the books I hate…?
Rachael - I did like the book, but I prefer the first one in this series to the others. The first was just so fresh and the voice so vibrant. It’s hard to sustain that through three books, not because of Davis but because I now have expectations about the voice (ie, it’s no longer as “fresh” since I’ve read it three times now). Other than that, Sophie works for me on just about every level. She’s funny and smart and rings true to me. Now, I do fear she’s going to start having a Murder She Wrote issue where everyone she knows either dies or is a killer, but I’m willing to go along for a few more books. And, Anatoly just charms me. Has from the first book.

Oh, I loved the first Sophie Katz book, which I just read this year. You’ve reminded me I need to order the next one in the series.
