Giveaway - Vicki Lewis Thompson
Seems to me we all need some good news. And, the December holidays are coming fast. So…it’s giveaway time!
A few weeks ago I did two discussions/signings with Vicki Lewis Thompson. Nice lady. Smart, talented and very kind to this newbie author.
Vicki writes funny. Writing funny is really hard. In part, the problem is that what one person finds funny turns out to be dumb or snarky or over-the-line to someone else. One thing that made me chuckle was Vicki’s answer to the question about the “death” of the romantic comedy - ie, the idea that no one is buying it or reading it. That was news to Vicki. See, she’s selling and keeps selling. To her, romantic comedy was alive and well. I’m thinking that’s proof that if you do it and do it well, the readers will buy it…so long as they know it’s out there to be bought.
Vicki is best known for her Nerd series. She hit the NYT bestseller list with that one. But, Vicki has written about more than nerds. She’s sold over 90 books. Her funny new series is not based on the Nerds. It’s about witches and dragons and…well, why take my word for it. Comment here on romantic comedy or Vicki or whatever you want between now and Saturday night and you’ll be entered to win a signed copy of Vicki’s newest - Over Hexed. Second in the series, Wild & Hexy , will be out in July ‘08, followed by Casual Hex in Feb. ‘09.
Good luck!

I love romantic comedy (also one of my favorite kinds of movies ;)) and Vicki is terrific at it! I recently acquired a bunch of her Harlequin Temptations, and she’s been great it this for a while!

There ia a fine line between funny and silly when you are doing romantic comedy.
VLT has found that balance and her books are amusing without being over the top.
I have been wanting to read ‘Over Hexed’ (LOL at the title!.)
I like romantic comedy in my books and movies. A couple of my favorites that come to mind are ‘Overboard’ with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell and ‘Desk Set’ with Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. I never get tired of those movies!

Romantic comedy is the most appealing and entertaining type of novel and movie. It always has been a way for me to escape from the daily grind and stress. VLT has written so many good books that I have always enjoyed.

Happy Thursday HelenKay! Over Hexed is a terrific book! I couldn’t put it down.

I love romantic comedy, and it’s nice to see it still alive and well. Sometimes reading all those dark, tortured romances, as much as I love them, gives me the need for something lighter. Thank God for writers like VLT who keep it fun.

VLT is on my favorite list of authors. I adore her books! I have been wanting Over Hexed but my holiday shopping cut to deep into my budget to get it. *pout* On the bright side all the shopping is done, thanks to starting early and the Internet.

I actually haven’t read anything by Vicki (yet) but her books do really sound good - and witches and dragons sound like it would be a great topic.

Vicki is definitely a pro at romantic comedy. When I pick up one of her books I don’t put it down till I’ve read the last page.

I completely agree with Stacy. I love all genres, but romantic comedy is the one genre that will always lift my spirits. Who doesn’t like to laugh?

I love romantic comedy–I’d better, because I write it. However, when I had my first agent, she cautioned me not to use the phrase “romantic comedy” to describe my writing because the genre was dying. I was to call it “light romance.” I do write light romance as well as romantic comedy, but to me my two published novels ARE romantic comedies, not “light romance,” so I continue to call them that, even if it’s leading to my demise. Vicki is well established and was well established in fun category romances before she began writing single title romcoms, but as a micro-press author (trade paperback and ebook) I can attest that unless you are a big name or (hopefully) even a medium name, romcoms don’t sell well. I’ve had several good reviews for my work, but it’s not reflected in the sale figures. Maybe, some day, if I ever sell to a major house, I’ll get the opportunity to gain more of a readership. For now, I write what I love to write and hope that sooner or later it pays off.
Now, I also write light erotic stories under a pen name. I also consider them romantic comedies. So far the pay-out (as in how much Kraft Dinner my family gets to consume) is far greater than it has been for non-erotic romantic comedies, and for that I’m grateful.

Love the cover.
I love good snappy, funny dialogue. Makes for a really enjoyable read. SEP, Erin Mccarthy do it just as well as VLT - The dialogue in The Nerd Who Loves Me is a hoot.
