It is rough. What I thought was interesting was the book got 2 Stars. With a review like that, I expected 1 Star.

Now, I do have to say that RT reviewers don't get a huge amount of space to write down their thoughts on each book. Usually, there's just a few lines then some info about the plot. This one jumped out at me because it was so out of the ordinary. RT reviewers usually don't come out with such strong wording. I figured if the reviewer was making this bold of a statement, the characters really made a huge impression - a bad one, yes.

As I said on the Brava website when talking about thisw issue, I've had really strong adverse reactions to characters in movies. For example, THE HOURS. Hated every single woman in the movie and, therefore, hated the movie. Other movies have bad people and I'm fine. I'm thinking it's a presentation issue. But, when it comes to books, I really can't think of one where I hated everyone in it. I'm sure there is one, but it's escaping me.

And, yes, I have no choice but to read this RT reviewed book...

An very opinionated. LOl Although I guess reviewers only ever give their opinion, but I do think they sometimes get carried away.

Interesting...Liking the characters vs the characters being likeable. I have read plenty of books where I would completely despise the characters were they people I knew in real life, but in their ficitional lives...I adored their horrendous personalities. One in particular that I absolutely loved was Lisa Edwards in Marian Keyes' Sushi For Beginners. She was a complete and utter Bi-atch!, but I loved her. Most of the other characters in the book were a bit more "likeable," however.

Honestly, this is a biggie for me. If I don't like the characters, I don't care what happens to them. I can't think of any books where I hated everybody in it, but I can name favorites that I will read and re-read, and I love the characters in those books. Not just the hero and heroine, but the supporting cast is full of people I want to hang out with. When I find that, I am a happy reader. As a writer, it's even more important to me. If I can't find the characters likeable, I don't want to hang with them for the hours it would take to read a book, let alone the months it takes to write!

HK - I read this and it made me think of this review over at SBTB, http://www.smartbitchestrashybooks.com/index.php/weblog/dark_lover_by_jr_ward/. Whatever happened to simply saying, "I liked the book. Some of the moments in it I hated, but I liked the book." I don't understand why some reviewers feel they must use hyperbole.

It makes me scratch my head. Do some people never stop trying to be the cool kids?
