New Year - New Thoughts

It’s a new year and a good time to make some life changes. These really aren’t resolutions. They’re more about figuring out what worked (and didn’t) in 2007 and revising from there.

1. Set aside distinct times to write each day. This is the “it’s a job and treat it as such” theory. Early in 2007 I wrote during a specific timeframe during the day. Toward the end of 2007…not so much. Not sure what happened, but I fell off track.

2. Get better organized with all the writing-related stuff. This basically comes down to keeping a better calendar and one with alerts prior to the time things are due or to happen so I know what’s coming up.

3. Spend less time on, and worrying about, book promotion.

4. Make writing a priority. What tends to happen is that I put what I need to do last on the mental list of household priorities so that I can focus on making everyone else happy and doing everything else for everyone else. Yeah, that’s gotta change. I have deadlines. From now on, those need to be a priority and other things can fill in around them.

5. Set aside an hour each day just for me. This is about getting out of the chair and out into the sunshine. Living in San Diego, I don’t have any excuse for being a shut-in.

6. Try something new. In 2007 I tried screenwriting, took a few classes through UCLA on the subject, and now have a draft screenplay and a will to try again. This year, outside of my deadlines and current writing obligations, I want to try to write something different. Just to see…

I’m sure there’s more, but these are the main ones.

Sounds like you have some really good resolutions there. That is more a plan of action, which is cool, and sounds like it will work out really well for your readers.

I think setting goals is better than making resolutions.

Commitments are great. Setting aside an hour each is very ambitious.

Happy New Year. I hope it is happier and better than last year. Last year I had an ankle fusion, Christmas Eve my daughter’s 40 year old boyfriend had a heart attack and Christmas Eve and Christmas Day we didn’t know if he would make it.
2008 I hope is my miracle year. I’ve had enough suffering. But my goal is to reach out to others better than they reached out to me. Although some very special authors sent me some books to read when I had surgery in Sept. I am still not out of shoe boot cast.
    God Bless.
