Annoying Poll

The good people at the Today Show have a poll posted. This one is in conjunction with a story about Danielle Steel. The poll asks if you read romance. Specifically, the affirmative response goes like this: “Yes, yes, yes! Bodice-rippers are my ultimate escape.” Yeah, it was written by a moron.

{{Sigh}}

Ignore the description of Steel as a romance novelist and the insulting way the poll is phrased, and go ahead and vote…or not. See, my general view is that people do not have to justify what they read, explain it or feel bad about it. And since romance novels sell like mad, I’m thinking someone is reading it. To everyone who doesn’t read romance but feels the need to mouth off about it - shut up.

    The bodice-ripper statement really bugs me. I love romance novels, but MSNBC tried to make it sound like reading romance is much like reading porn. The survey would be fine if they had asked for a simple yes or no answer.

  2. Fedora Says:

    Ditto what Liza said–I hated how they phrased their possible replies!

    Word.

  5. Kerry Allen Says:

    And why the third option? Reading it at the beach isn’t REALLY reading it?

  6. Jill Sorenson Says:

    OK, I’m sensitive about this, but I hate the term “bodice-ripper.” To me, it suggests force, not romance. My number one pet peeve is a heroine who says no when she mean yes, and it bothers me when people think this is what romance is about.

  7. Susan Says:

    If you ’sometimes’ read a romance novel then shouldn’t your answer be ‘yes’?

  8. Karin Says:

    I, too, am annoyed by the wording of the options. And Susan makes a good point about the third option of ’sometimes’ being downright silly since it should be ‘yes’.
