Trite, yes. Wooden, yes. But I loved the actress who played the love interest--something very serene in her face--and when he says he's not free and leaves her crying on the bed. My mom, who saw it with me in the theater ages ago, got very upset by the finale because grape vine roots can extend down hundreds of feet.
